Basic Guidance for the Beginning Vocalist

My Philosophy

My Philosophy, regarding the advice I offer and the way I do business in general.

First and above all, I believe in fairness and honesty. I highly recommend them to others. They have done me well, in business and life in general. I deal fairly and honestly with people and I expect the same in return. That does not mean that I am so naive as to think that everyone is fair and honest. I am on guard, for myself and for those I assist.

Part of being fair and honest with you is in my being straightforward with my advice and opinions. I will not be cruel. I will be as tactful as possible. (Picture something half-way between Randy and Simon.) But, I will not lead you on if I honestly do not believe you are going to do well. If you are not interested in hearing the bad with the good, please, don’t apply to me for my advice.

I believe in working toward one’s goals and dreams. For the vast majority of people, nothing good comes if you just sit waiting. I believe that you should be the one to work hardest toward your goals and dreams. I will help you, as best I can, as long as I think you are giving it your best effort. If I don’t think you are trying very hard, I will be inclined to spend my time and effort on those who do.

I believe that, no matter how good you are, you can always get better. For the voice, this means practice and training. Be forewarned; as far as I will be concerned, your voice will never be perfect. In other aspects of business -- and you are going to be in business -- it takes training and practice. I will guide you. I will try to motivate you. But, you are the one who is going to have to do the work.

I believe in helping other people. Offering my advice through this site is only one of several ways I volunteer my time. I find it fulfilling. I enjoy seeing a smile on someone’s face that I have helped in some little way. I will be encouraging you to volunteer; because you will find it fulfilling and, honestly, it will lead to good public relations.

I believe in Me. I want to believe in You and to help you believe in yourself.

My Background

In brief; I have studied and been associated with the music industry for most of my adult life. I have done everything from toting band gear, to operating studio recording equipment, and managing talent. I have operated my own business, complete with the accounting, taxes, contracts, press releases, advertising, PR, and all the other pieces needed to make it work.

As I looked around, I saw that more and more talented young people did not seem to have, or perceive that they had, the resources to pursue a career in music. I began offering my advice and guidance, free of charge, to some local prospective musical talent about six years ago. I have found this to be fun, challenging, and gratifying. I have met and worked with some very fine and interesting people.

As both of my daughters have grown and left home, I find myself with more time on my hands. The best thing I can think of to do with that time is to try to help others in some way. Therefore, I have decided to take my offer of advice and guidance to more people, in more places, by virtue of this wonderful communications device; the internet. It is for this purpose that I have launched Singer-Help. I hope that, if you are an aspiring vocalist, you will consider taking advantage of what it offers.

I Won't Do Bands through this site. I have nothing against bands. I have worked with a few groupes that are local to me. While these were not bad experiances, it takes a great deal of time and energy, and can be quite taxing.

The problem with bands is the number of people and the mix of personalities that have to be dealt with. There are also much more complex business issues and greatly increased logistics accociated with group performances. While this can be a nice challenge, when you can deal with it "on-site", it would be impossible to do a good job of it in a long-distance mode.

I also have to consider that, with the time and effort that I would expend in helping one group, I could probably be advising a half-dozen or more individual vocalists.

Please, forgive me, but I just won't do bands.
